*On Saturday, I ran a 5k (which was actually 3.25 according to my GPS) along side a third-grade girl who loves to run. The time/distance/pace was not mine, it was hers. As her “mobile cheerleader” I just happened to pace her, offering support and encouragement. For the fourth season in a row, I’ve volunteered time with our local Run Girl Run program which coaches and mentors 3rd-5th grade girls to prepare for, and run, their first 5k. The event they ran was a small race to raise money and awareness for the Amani Center, a child abuse assessment center. The Race Against Child Abuse offers a 5k, 10k, half-marathon and a one-mile walk.

After working with the group of 15 girls for 10 weeks, who were all fantastic girls by the way, I sort of fell in love with one girl in particular. Of all the girls, this one stood out to me because of her joyfulness while running. It was infectious! When I’d run with her, I’d feel it too. I think it is something that tends to go unnoticed, if it’s there at all, when your intently focused on your mileage, pace, etc. She ran every training run, finishing first nearly every single time. I only heard her complain once and that is when we announced that we had shortened the route that day!! I imagine that this girl will go far and it was an honor to run with her on Saturday. All of the girls who participated did a great job and I always enjoy my time working with them so much! I’m a little sad it’s over!

Anyway, as you can see, it was quite the drop in mileage this week compared to last weeks 57.5! I messed up on my mileage record and forgot to add a long run to my YTD total but a few days ago I hit the 1000 mile mark for the year so far! Just over a 1000 more to my goal of 2014 for the year!!!

For the first time since February, I took two days off from running this week. Between the extra day off, tapering, and no long run over the weekend, I ran about 25 miles less than last week! I originally planned to swap rest days and take yesterday off and run today. But *insert lame excuse here* my foot hurts from the bee sting I got two days ago! Even though I hiked on it yesterday and barely even noticed it, I woke up this morning to a super itchy, tender, and slightly swollen spot at the site of the sting.

About that hike! My daughter had an event to attend on the east side (waaaaaaaaaaay east side!) of Portland Saturday night and when I realized she was roughly a half-hour away from a trail near Mt. Hood that I’ve been wanting to hike forever, well, I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity! I made the drive to pick her up and then we continued on to the Mirror Lake trail head.

So instead of running on Sunday, I hiked 6.7 miles with my daughter. I’ve said so before, but I LOVE hiking! Here’s a few pics from our adventure!

A good trade I’d say! When we got to the top of the ridge, overlooking the lake and across to the stunning Mt. Hood, I surprised my daughter with a sweet treat from our favorite bakery. The day, our spontaneous adventure, was absolutely awesome!! This is what it is all about, isn’t it?
