*Strength… Stamina… Spartan*

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably already looking ahead to 2017 and considering how you are going to challenge yourself, set new goals, and experience some fresh, exciting events. It’s fun to think about all of the possibilities and planning for a new year!

One such possibility you might want to consider is registering for a Spartan Race. Spartan Race combine running with obstacles that require strength and stamina. They offer challenging courses and “provide racers of all levels a proving ground to test themselves.” It’s a brilliant test of strength, both physically and mentally. The bonus is, they’re also a ton of fun!

Spartan Race has races throughout the year in a number of cities and regions. You can check out their complete list of events on their website but if you’re itchin’ to start working toward a new goal, they do have events coming up in the earlier part of 2017, starting with SoCal the end of January. Other early 2017 locations include Las Vegas, Arizona, Houston, and Atlanta.

Season passes, for those that want to commit to more than one event, are now available. They sell out fast so don’t delay in making the commitment. (I’d wager to say that a season pass might also make a fantastic Christmas gift for the athlete in your life!) There are three pass options including the Trifecta, which allows the participant to complete in three races anytime in 2017. The Open Season Pass and Elite Season Pass allow for unlimited Spartan Races and are a great option for the serious Spartan competitor.

Also new for 2017 are some kicked-up race obstacles, Spartan gear and the coveted medals.

One of the things I love about Spartan Race is that it’s not just about the race. The organization helps with guiding future participants with training and workouts to help racers prepare for events, offers nutrition advice and recipes (sent right to your email inbox if you sign up!), and they even offer an educational course which is intended to help participant find success whether in the race itself or day-to-day life. It’s a well-rounded program based upon the philosophy that you can change your life by tackling obstacles and challenges head-on and doing so with a willingness to learn from them to become stronger.

If you’re looking for a new challenge in 2017, set your sights on training for a Spartan Race! Aroo!!

*A little of this, a little of that*

Sunday evening. Thank goodness for an extra day off this weekend because I need it! Tomorrow is a big day dedicated to getting organized for the coming week. Time management, in addition to simplifying in all areas of my life, has become a big focus for me. I want to minimize to maximize. Oxymoron? Maybe. But I’ve got some fun things happening and in order to bring my A game, I need to create space in so many ways!

A few things on my radar I thought I’d share:

  • There are just a few more days left to take advantage of the registration discount for the Reebok Spartan Race! Use the code: MEMORIAL at checkout to save up to $40 off your registration fee. The offer is only good until 5/27 so don’t wait any longer! (In fact, Mr. Wasn’t Just the Wine Talking and I have decided that we are going to do a Reebok Spartan Race together later this summer and are going use this training plan!)
  • Posting here on Wasn’t Just the Wine Talking has been sporadic, at best, lately. My friend, Amanda, Just a Mom who TRI’s, recently shared her thoughts on her own blog with this post: Is the blog dead? I have no plans to quit blogging and have some big ideas around blogging in general that I’m working to manifest. (More on that at some point later!) But I really appreciated her honesty!
  • Speaking of… much of my effort to re-organize revolves around that fact that I’ve been asked to join the team of bloggers that works to keep Oregon-area (and SW Washington) runners in-the-know! I’m so honored to begin sharing my own musings on www.runoregonblog.com, coming soon!!!!!
  • One of my biggest challenges right now, in terms of writing, is that I don’t have a laptop. I’m grateful that I have a computer at all, but I fantasize about owning a sweet little laptop that I can tote around to a coffee shop, or even my deck to sit in the sun, to write. My previous laptop died a while back and it’s just not been in the budget to replace. The other portion of my little fantasy is creating an equally sweet little office space where I can comfortably sip creamy coffee concoctions while I put pen to paper… or fingertips to keyboard.

The kind of creative space I crave!

  • I’m on a serious super-foods kick. My latest obsession is bee pollen. It’s been a while since I’ve had some on hand but I picked some up at the farmer’s market yesterday and am looking forward to some kitchen alchemy tomorrow. I’m not sure this is the exact recipe I’ll use but something similar.
  • My latest read: You Are a Brand!

Marketing, networking, branding, oh my!

  • Finally, my thoughts on Memorial Day. This may offend some… but I’ve been saddened to see how deluded this holiday has become. While I wholeheartedly agree with taking every opportunity to honor not only our veterans, but also our deceased love ones, I’m not sure society realizes what it is we are honoring on Memorial Day. It is a day to memorialize our service men and women who have died in the line of duty while defending our country. I love a BBQ as much as the next gal, but I really hope people take the time to recognize the reason behind the extra day off tomorrow.

However you plan to spend the holiday, be safe and make it a day to remember!

This past week was a BIG transition week for me! The previous week I was uncertain about running Boston at all, sick, and only ran 28 miles. I was pretty much having a big-ass pity party! Fast forward a week and I’ve recommitted to my dream of completing what I started, threw myself into training, started feeling a ton better (though still not 100%) and got in some decent mileage, totaling 52.75.

Yesterday I executed a pretty good training run which was my longest run in several months. I realized afterwards that it was a culmination of my efforts over the course of the entire week that paid off! I cut out alcohol, ate super clean, went to bed early most nights, made time to stretch daily, and really poured myself into the lifestyle, so to speak. It was a pretty dang good start, I think.

Today is my rest and regroup day for which I’m totally grateful! (I’ve been up since 3:50!) This week I’ll continue to build up my mileage and work to keep the momentum on the efforts that I began to institute last week.

If you haven’t already, be sure to enter to win my Reebok Spartan Race giveaway!! You can enter HERE!

Have a great week and GO UO DUCKS!!!

*Spartan’s take over the world*

“Spartan Race is on a mission to get you active, healthy, excited about change, and return to our ancient roots where running through woods, getting dirty, and facing adversity was part of everyday life. Our events are all about challenging today’s perception of normal.”

SR_altbizcard__girlwall_1

YES!!! That is some good sh*t! (I especially love the “excited about change” and “challenging today’s perception of normal” parts!)

When I read the mission of Reebok Spartan Race, I couldn’t help but be drawn to their desire to help ordinary people reach higher and to do something truly extraordinary!

The peeps at Reebok Spartan Race are reaching higher too! They’ve outdone themselves this year with some really exciting things in store.

“Having experienced many different racing events, we wanted to make adventure racing more accessible to everyone, but do not be fooled by the word ‘accessible’, as our events have a challenge for everyone’s needs.”

In order to make their events accessible to everyone, they’ve added a new feature this year. In 2015, there are more options than ever to experience what it means to be a Spartan. For the beginner, there is the Spartan Sprint. (That’s me!) The Super Spartan event is for intermediate athletes. Advanced? There is an event for you: The Spartan Beast! Oh, and let’s not forget the cray-cray among us, (and they say 99.9% need not apply) is the extreme level Death Race. EEK!

But wait! There’s more!

Why stop at doing just one Spartan event this year when you could purchase a Spartan Annual Pass, which also offers VIP access to all US races, kick ass perks like travel discounts, and unlimited racing!

Or, how about a Spartan Cruise that takes you to a private island in the Bahamas for the ultimate tropical island Spartan race? How cool is that?! Part vacation, part epic obstacle adventure on white sand beaches. The Spartan Cruise is coming up in early March so if the idea of a weekend of racing in the Bahamas interests you, you can find more information about the Island Cruise here.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the 2015 Spartan World Championship in Lake Tahoe this October. The weekend-long event will feature all four racing options with over $500,000 in cash prizes being awarded to top finishers! You’ll find more beastly details at the aforementioned link.
